The wide timba map · Cuba and the world
90 bands and orchestras through which to hear timba
From Orquesta Revé, Los Van Van and NG La Banda to Calle Real, Mayimbe, La Evolución and a young Japanese big band. No invented league table: first the canon, then the deeper branches and the international scene.
Search for “the best timba bands” and the same ten names appear again and again. That is enough for a first encounter. It is not enough to understand the music: behind the 1990s canon are songo, changüí and Afro-Cuban jazz, while outside Cuba a timba scene has developed its own history.
This is a listening map. It contains 48 Cuban orchestras, 18 Cuban-led and mixed diaspora projects, and 24 international groups. Some are active; others matter as recorded history. It is not a 2026 booking roster.

Sources and verification
This is not a reassembly of one ranking. The editorial team compared musicological research, reporting from different periods, awards and discography records, and official pages from bands, venues and festivals. Every short annotation was written afresh. Line-ups and activity change, so concert plans still require a current check.
